Ellis College

Ellis College opens the doors of success for you. To that end, we combined:

  • Business knowledge from top universities
  • Nobel Prize-winning economists
  • Experts in instructional design and usability
  • Ground-breaking technology
  • An entrepreneurial spirit
These qualities represent our goal: to transform education and bring high-quality business education to students everywhere.

Ellis College grew from an idea developed by Andrew Rosenfield (an economist, educator, and lawyer), and Gary Becker, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago. Part of Becker's work focused on the idea that education helps workers succeed in their careers. Unfortunately, most of us don't have access to high quality, site based university courses. Rosenfield and Becker wanted to make this level of education more available, and to develop a new way of learning. To this end, they created an innovative program that blends Internet technology and progressive ideas in education, using content from the best universities. That program is the Ellis College MBA (and other online programs).

Ellis College then formed an academic consortium with five elite institutions:

Educators from these universities collaborated with Ellis College course designers and technology experts on making effective Internet learning. The first courses were released in 2000 and embedded business knowledge in practical, real-world course activities. Students completed courses by solving actual business problems.

Ellis College reached another milestone in 2000 when it gained accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (www.detc.org). The DETC is a national accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (www.chea.org). The same year, the Illinois Board of Higher Education granted Ellis College the authority to award the M.B.A. degree, making Cardean the first online university to earn degree-granting authorization in Illinois.

In April 2001, Ellis College began its relationship with General Motors, the first of many corporate customers to recognize the value of the Cardean education. General Motors University President Donnee Ramelli chose Ellis College for its "premium quality content, leading-edge learning approach, speed, global access, and cost savings." Along with GM, Cardean is also serving numerous other Fortune 500 companies through Thomson Learning, a division of the Thomson Corporation.

Ellis College has taught thousands of students from more than 90 countries, and there are more than 1,000 students enrolled in Ellis College.
